Clarkdale is a small town located in the heart of Arizona and (like the small Arizonan town of Oak Creek), it is arguably one of the Sunshine State’s overlooked gems. Clarkdale is teeming with excellent attractions and can be seen as a great alternative to Sedona and one of the best small towns near Pheonix. Clarkdale is easily one of the most beautiful small towns in Arizona.
Clarkdale is nestled in the middle of Arizona’s red rock country in Yavapai County with the Verde River flowing through the town. It is a gateway to some of Arizona’s most stunning landscapes and an excellent alternative to the much busier city of Sedona.
Clarkdale: From Mining Town To Scenic Small Town Sedona Alternative
Clarkdale preserves the mining heritage of Arizona and has a historic town center to explore
Clarkdale started out as a mining town (like so many towns in Arizona). It was founded over a hundred years ago (in 1912) as a company smelter town for a copper mine. For a time, Clarkdale was among the most important mining towns in the world and was an early community to have telegraph, telephone, electrical, sewer, and spring water services installed.
- Founded: 1912
- Population: Approx. 4,400
Times always change, and in 1953 the mine and smelter shut down and the town declined. The opening of the Phoenix Cement Company partially revitalized the town but these days it is more of a retirement community that also attracts a vibrant arts community.
Clarkdale’s town center was constructed in the Spanish Colonial style and today the original town site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
